I first met Carmen in the early 1970s when I worked for Criminal Intelligence. She ran a late night coffee bar in Vivian Street, Wellington. It was an exotic establishment, dark and mysterious. I always admired Carmen for her courage and honesty to be who she was; everything about her seemed to shout out “this is me” — the antithesis of that shadowed, deceitful world in which I operated.
